Bridgework Types

Bridgework are made from various processes and materials according to their requirements.

Traditional Bridgework

It is a very simple application to make. Support is provided by attaching to the teeth on the sides of the problematic tooth. While treating problematic teeth, some retaining teeth are rasped to fix the sides. The aim is to fill the gaps and fix the damaged tooth. The biggest advantage of this bridge is that its appearance is not visible. It is very successful in terms of aesthetics.

Distal Extension Bridge

It is also known as a balcony bridge. It is a dental bridge applied in the case of natural teeth, only on one side of the damaged tooth area. This method is used when the patient does not want to use prosthesis.

The natural tooth next to the artificial tooth is cut and rasped to make room for the suspension bridge. It is then fixed by the artificial tooth bonding method.

Maryland (Winged) Bridge

The application, also known as adhesive, is made by attaching to adjacent teeth. The artificial tooth made instead of the missing tooth is attached to the invisible back sides of the adjacent teeth. The back surface of adjacent natural teeth is made rough and gluten is added. Both sides of the artificial tooth are fixed by using these gluten materials.

The aim is to prevent the cutting of healthy natural teeth and to perform bridging.

Since it is not very good in terms of adhesiveness and fixation, it is not recommended to be applied to the cheek teeth in chewing duty. Even if applied, the usage time will be very short.

Materials Used While Making Dental Bridge

Material selection is made according to the tooth condition in the dental bridge. Some of those:

  • Solid Zirconium
  • Zirconium supported porcelain
  • Full metal
  • Metal supported

Porcelain Bridge

Since its raw material is strong and durable, it is applied to damaged teeth on the back. At strong metal skeleton base is formed layer. Porcelain crown is also made on the upper part. Metal and porcelain are bonded together by intense heat process. Thus, a structure resistant to the chewing process that requires power is created.

This method is not suitable for a single tooth, but for multiple missing teeth side by side.

Zirconium Supported Porcelain

Zirconium material is seen by dentists among the most durable materials. Although it has a very transparent and thin appearance, it is very durable when combined with the tooth. It has two types, translucent and solid.

To be made a translucent zirconium bridge must be missing one or two teeth. It is not recommended for tooth losses more than two. The aesthetic result is very good in visible anterior teeth.

Solid zirconium bridges are applied to patients who have tooth loss more than two and to patients who have behavior damaging to artificial material by clenching their teeth. It provides aesthetics as well as durability by coloring in accordance with the tooth structure.

Temporary Bridge Teeth

The substance in their content is not strong and durable. It can be applied in a laboratory environment and can be easily prepared by the dentist. It is not preferred for cheek teeth and long bridge requirements. Care should be taken even when used. It is fragile.

How is Bridgework Applied?

Since the first stage varies according to the amount of teeth and damage, the procedures to be performed are determined. After the examination, thinning and cuts are applied to the teeth. During the application, the tooth is numbed.

Then, sizes are measured. With the paste for measurement prepared by the dentist, the tooth impression is molded.

After the measurement phase, a temporary bridge tooth is attached. The reason for this is that the thinned teeth become sensitive. When it is not, aching and pain occurs in the tooth.

The molded teeth are sent to the laboratory for preparation. Depending on workload, there may be a waiting period of 3 to 10 days. When the teeth are prepared, you go to examination for rehearsal.

In the rehearsal, features such as deficiencies, excesses, tooth comfort, and compatibility with the mouth are checked. If there is a problem, the dentist corrects it and the bonding process is started.
